Based at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the BIOMAR marine biology lab carries out its research on the bioecology of marine benthic invertebrates, with a special focus on echinoderms.

JPEG - 16.7 kb Chantal De Ridder, Emeritus Professor at the ‘Université Libre de Bruxelles’, studies the biology of marine benthos within an evolutionary and ecological context. Through morphological and functional observations, her researches aim to characterize the position an organism within its environment. She has a particular interest for echinoderms (and more particularly for echinoids) being concerned by three research topics: (1) the functioning and ecological places of symbiotic interactions (mutualism, commensalism, parasitism) involving echinoderms as one of the partners, (2) the features and ecological consequences of nutrition - from feeding behaviors, aptitudes, and digestive organs to trophic niches -, (3) the comprehensive understanding of biogeographic distributions of echinoids.

She is currently works at the Marine Biology Lab, Université Libre de Bruxelles as a phD student, on ecological modelling. Her research aims at studying the sensitivity of benthic antarctic communities to environmental changes through the development of new methodological approaches (using species distribution models, dynamic energy budget models and ecosystemic models).
