Originally trained as a geologist and a paleontologist, his works focuse on evolution of living forms, both regarding patterns (phylogeny, large scale structuration of biodiversity) and processes (symbiosis, evolution-development relationships and emergence of phenotypes). The biological models retained to explore such avenues are echinoderms, with a specific focus on echinoids. He authored a book and edited an extensive database on Antarctic echinoids, which are a focus of interest. He is also deeply involved in understanding the origin of radial symmetry in echinoderms and how the fivefold pattern is intimately related to seriality (repetition of elements along arms) and the antero-posterior polarization (A/P axis). More recently he became interested in functioning and evolution of symbiosis between tropical echinoid hosts and parasitic crabs. In those areas of research, his main regular collaborations are with Brussels (ULB), San Francisco (California Academy of Sciences), and more recently Santiago (Universidad de Chile).

JPEG - 15.8 kb Sébastien Motreuil is engineer (CNRS) at Biogéosciences laboratory (UMR CNRS 6282) in Dijon since 2004. He is specialized in zootechnics (CNRS level 3) that concerns with animal field sampling, animal handling, animal experiment, and animal housing facilities. In 2012 he received the special prize of zootechnicians (INSB - CNRS) rewarding work enhancement acts in animal housing facilities. After 10 years spent at Observatoire Océanologique de Villefranche-sur-Mer as service engineer (CNRS) in charge of aquariums as well as field sampling and instrumentation operations at sea, he is currently in charge of living animal field sampling, experiment, and housing facilities at Biogéosciences laboratory. With more than 2,000 dives since he started diving in 1987, Sébastien is also Advanced European Scientific Diver (European Scientific Diving Panel) and Leader Scientific Diver (CAH B II & CPS CNRS) in charge of Biogéosciences laboratory diving service. He recently co-authored several scientific papers. Underwater photographer, his underwater pictures were published in two recent books devoted to marine science.

JPEG - 21.1 kb Benjamin Pierrat is a marine ecologist with broad interest in echinoid systematics, macroecology, and biogeography. During his PhD thesis, defended in 2011 and supervised by Bruno David and Thomas Saucède, Benjamin analyzed species distribution patterns in Antarctic benthic invertebrates (echinoids, bivalves, and gastropods) using different biogeographical approaches including ecological niche modelling and faunal similarity analyses. Since the end of his PhD, he is study engineer for a French national program, E-Recolnat, which aims to make available and useful all information of museum and university collections through the creation of a database and collaborative tools.

Geologist and paleontologist by training, he has research interests in macroecology, macroevolution, and biogeography. Based on fossil and extant species records obtained from fieldwork and survey of academic collections, his main research activities are devoted to studying the respective roles of environment (abiotic and biotic parameters), clade evolution, and Earth history in the structuring of large-scale biogeographic patterns.
The Antarctic (Southern Ocean) constitutes the privileged geographic framework in which he studies the patterns and processes of marine biodiversity dynamics, present and past; echinoids (sea-urchins) represent his main taxonomic group of interest. More specifically, a part of his work consists in describing the patterns of the morphological diversification irregular echinoids have experienced since the early Jurassic to the present day.
